Who is a witch? What is witchcraft? How do we define magic? We will discuss these terms and collectively define them keeping in mind the changes in their usage from the pre-modern era through the present day and within different contexts across the globe. We will also set our intentions for our time together including writing and altar-building goals for the month.

We will study and then work with the words from the trial transcripts of Saint Joan of Arc and Mattucia DiFrancesco who were both accused of witchcraft and burned at the end of their trails. What can we learn from these case studies? We will craft a working to honor the memory of these two witch ancestors and to protect ourselves from harm.

How are witchcraft and divination in conversation with one-another? Divinatory arts are as old as humans and have been practice for as long. However, they have also been the reason that many witches have been hunted and prosecuted throughout human history. We will discuss and practice different forms of divinations. Participants will be invited to share a form of divination from their own practice, and Kristen will pull cards for those present in the class.

In this concluding session, we will revisit our collective definitions of witch, witchcraft, and magic to examine, expand, and refine our own understanding of them after a month of study and engagement. Participants will leave this session with an individually crafted spell to continue their work after the class ends. Kristen will share examples of spells from her own ancestral practice.
