This course is an invitation to explore witchcraft and magic as cultural constructions that reflect and shape societal values, fears, and aspirations across time and place. We will explore the witch as a figure who engages in illicit practices of magic and medicine, and as a tool of colonial and patriarchal control. We will practice the arts of divination, altar-building, and spell work as a way to better understand witchcraft traditions.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, including writing, meditation, and more, we’ll investigate how the Witch has been represented across visual and literary culture, developing an understanding of her as a symbol of shifting gender, class, and power relations. The class will pay special attention to the witch’s role as an instrument of creative resistance, especially against the disciplining of women and gender-nonconforming bodies, as well as her emergence as a defiant emblem in contemporary decolonial and feminist movements.
Please note that the lecture and discussion sections of this class will be recorded and shared with those enrolled to enjoy asynchronously. The workshop and practice sessions will not be recorded to protect the privacy of participants.

There will be 2 full and 5 half scholarships available for this course. Please submit your name and email if you are in need of financial assistance. We will pick names out of a hat on August 1st and notify everyone who has reached out to us then.
